United Nations World Food Programme nominates Sara Shamma as Celebrity Partner, Damascus, Syria
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has nominated the Syrian painter Sara Shamma as a Celebrity Partner of the Programme, the announcement of this nomination took place during the first field visit that the artist conducted on the 6th of December 2010 to two food distribution centers for Iraqi Refugees in Syria.
The artist Shamma will support WFP through her artwork and will use her position and reputation in the cultural scene to bring attention to its humanitarian projects. Her support will start by giving some items designed by her and carrying pictures of her paintings to be sold for the benefit of WFP; also she will create a large-scale painting inspired by the suffering of the vulnerable refugees and the response of WFP, this painting will be sold in an auction house in the end of 2011 after being exhibited in different national and international exhibitions, all proceeds will go to WFP. Syrian famous film director Nabil Al-Maleh will produce a short documentary about the phases of the creation of the painting and its relation with needy people and WFP projects, as contribution to Sara's campaign.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the largest humanitarian organization in the world; it fights hunger and distributes food aids to millions of people in many countries. As for Syria WFP is running different projects in collaboration with Syrian government, the most important ones are related to thousands of Iraqi refugees and thousands of Syrian victims of drought in the north east of the country.
